September Edition
It is September! The ABCs of Aging is designed with one thing in mind- to show others that you will Age and you must Adapt. You have one Body and it needs to maintain Balance. There is one Core to your body and it helps to be Centered. This month in the ABCs of Aging we want to wish everyone a happy fall - minus the falls.
Whether you are helping a client, resident at your facility or aging loved one, the last thing you want to see as we enter the fall season is a fall. Falls usually pave the way for more serious issues and create a domino effect once that fall has occured. If you are working with the independent (mobile), dependent (walker user) or vulnerable (wheelchair user) senior then you want to be extra careful and take into consideration some safety checks this month. September is a good month to evaluate some of the environmental surroundings that are in your seniors' vicinity.
For those who work with seniors be on the lookout for:
- Proper footwear
- Tied shoelaces
- Electrical cords
- Loose rugs or carpets
- Good lighting
- Steps in or around their desired setting
September is a beautiful month and the subtle sound of the rustling leaves that have dried out reminds us that change is coming. As we age and our bodies change, it is a good reminder to be proactive rather than reactive. Let's help seniors make positive changes before they are forced to react to some of those changes.
Some of you might have seen the looks on your seniors' faces after they have experienced a fall. Shuffling their feet has started to become their new normal due to fear. Perhaps walking from their space to the recreation room, dining room, or even their own living room, now takes a little longer. The pain they felt is something they don't want to experience again. The broken arm, leg, or hip created a visit to that skilled nursing facility that really had an impact.
Before the seniors in your life take the next steps they must assess their surroundings. Be proactive because fall is coming and we don't want to see more falls!
